They paved paradise...
Well, actually, they didn't — but they did make it a parking lot!

August 2016

Trinity College (our landlord) and the University of Toronto are still haggling over restoration of the courts, and in June 2016 we were advised that Trinity College is not even sure they want the courts back. (See the end of this message for what you can do to help.)

In the meantime, Trinity College has turned the courts into a parking lot, which is an eyesore and a damn shame:

Councillor Joe Cressy to the rescue...

TCTC has had great support from City Councillor Joe Cressy and the City-University-Community Liaison Committee (CLC), which he chairs. They were most surprised that we hadn't received any meaningful communication in the two years since the Goldring Centre construction project finished (September 2014), and have encouraged Trinity College and the University of Toronto to at least let us know where we stand.

So, where do we stand?

In July 2016, Jason MacIntyre, the new Trinity College Bursar (Geoff Seaborn retired earlier this year), invited a delegation from TCTC to meet with him to discuss our concerns. Jason said that he expected to have an answer on the courts in "early fall" — likely by October 2016. He apologized on Trinity's behalf for the long delay in resolving the status of the tennis courts, and for the resulting impact on TCTC.

We made the following points to Jason as to why restored courts could be an ideal use of this space, if only temporarily while other plans are being considered:

  • synergistic with surrounding high-performance Goldring Centre sports complex and Varsity Arena
  • eco green space — an "oasis"
  • tie in with Trinity College's 2016 Strategic Plan (co-curricular activities, heritage, environment)
  • why not use the land for community and student benefit while Trinity figures out what they are doing?

We also asked whether it would be helpful to put the question to Trinity College students (perhaps via social media?).

With the resurgence of interest in tennis (thanks in part to Canada's top players), the students would likely be excited about having the courts back, which could look like this again:

What can you do?

Let Trinity Provost Mayo Moran (mayo.moran@utoronto.ca) know how you feel about the value of the tennis courts to the Trinity experience and to the community. Engage your associations if you are a student or alumni!

And please cc the following so that your concerns are duly noted:

It's now or never, tennis fans!

Who We Are

Trinity College Tennis Club at the University of Toronto operates from April to September on Trinity College's three outdoor courts on Devonshire Place (across from Varsity Centre) just south of Bloor Street (map). A private community club, TCTC has been around for more than 50 years and offers great company and great tennis.

All players are welcome (well, almost all – members must be at least 18 years of age).

Important 2016 Update

As most of you are aware, the Trinity College Tennis Courts have been shut down for four years now. And as of early February 2016, we still don't know if we will get the courts back for the 2016 season.

There are still many issues to be resolved between Trinity College (our landlord), and the University of Toronto in order to restore the courts to playing condition. We are asking both parties to find a speedy resolution to these issues so we can get the courts back. Check your inbox to find out how you can help, or ask a TCTC member.

In the meantime, we recommend that you continue to seek memberships in other tennis clubs while these issues are being resolved.

Please note that emails regarding membership will not be answered until we confirm our status for the 2016 season.

Previous members are encouraged NOT to remove themselves from the email list in an effort to stay connected! If you are interested in playing at TCTC, and would like more information, please subscribe to the TCTC Mailing List.

This has been a long process. Thank you for your patience.

Trinity Tennis News: TCTC to Shut Down for 2 Years

The Trinity College Tennis Club recently met with the Bursar of Trinity College and he shared some unfortunate news.

The University of Toronto is proceeding with a large construction project to the north of the courts. There will be a high-performance athletic centre and departmental offices in the new complex. UofT requires access to the north end of the tennis courts during construction, as they are planning to place the new building right up to the fence, and need the excavation space. The project is expected to start in the Spring of 2012.

What this means is that Trinity Tennis will shut down for two years during construction. This is going to be difficult for many TCTC members who spend a lot of summer hours there. But if the project goes according to schedule, we will have rebuilt courts ready for use in 2014.

Returning TCTC members from the 2011 season will receive the reduced membership rate when the club reopens.

In the meantime, we will inquire about using City of Toronto public courts to hold a few round robins during the club's hiatus. We will also try to provide you with information about neighbouring tennis clubs that can take on additional members. Be sure to check your inbox on a regular basis for more information.

This is a large project, and while we hope to have the courts back in a few years, construction delays can occur. We will keep you informed of developments by email and through our website.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you back on the courts in a few seasons.

    Court Steward Seasonal Contract Position

Trinity College Tennis Club is looking for a Court Steward to monitor/manage our community tennis club in downtown Toronto on the University of Toronto campus. The ideal candidate will be punctual, flexible, and diplomatic; show initiative and good judgment; and have the ability to work with no supervision. Familiarity with the rules, etiquette and the game of tennis is definitely preferable. A first aid course would be an asset, but is not required.

Duties include monitoring the court tag-up board, keeping the courts and clubhouse clean, ensuring that club rules and court etiquette are followed, locking up clubhouse, collecting guest fees, and fostering a positive tennis atmosphere.

The Court Steward must be at least 18 years of age and be physically able to do light lifting. This position extends from the beginning of May 2011 to the end of September 2011. The hours are weekdays 4pm to sundown.

Please submit your resume and cover letter by February 18, 2011, to trinitytennis@yahoo.com, with "Court Steward" in the subject line.

We are closed for the season!

    Dear TCTC members and friends:
Have a safe and hopefully tennis-filled winter. We will see you again next April. Packages will be emailed mid-February.
